Hi
I have a 60 gallon that is cycling and I would love it in my "great room". Here is the issue. The tank is on the south wall. Picture below. It is near a southfacing window and two east facing windows. I can protect it from direct light but it will get lots of light in this room. The opposite wall is north and east facing and again lots of light but not direct from these. picture below.

Question. Am I heading for algae disaster? I did buy a UV sterilizer to put in the tank. Keeping it covered for cycling right now. At the end of cycling and the 80-90% water change I could move it to my office, less light but then it would not be central for all to see.

Thank you

Built the house for maximum light... before I got interested in fishkeeping. :look:

You might have temperature problems as well as potential algae problems if the tank is in direct sunlight for much of the day. One of my tanks thermometers goes up 5 degrees C when exposed like this so i keep curtains half drawn now (although i'm not sure whether that's just the thermometer getting heated or the water itself but i play safe.)

Looks like a beautiful location to have a house , where are you?

If you're running UV somewhere in the filtration system then you may have small algae problems, but as soon as you scrape it off and it goes into the filter it'll get zapped. So I can't see it ever getting that bad.
Alternatively if you don't plan on having plants at all then you can invest in a phosphate remover (like the ones used in marine systems).

Temperature could be a problem as Philak said, but so long as it's not direct sunlight you shouldn't have any huge problems.

And that really is a great view!

Well I feel a bit better about it. The UV sterilizer I bought is an in tank one. Guess I'll go for it and see what happens.
By the way, I live at 6300 feet up at Lake Tahoe in CA, US. Summer temps are never that high so not worried about sun and temps just worried about algae. The views out the window... well we had some snow recently. Makes it all look glorious.

Thanks for the responses.
