Hi, I've seen these two ornaments at pets@home and I think both could look good in my tank. It says they are both made from polyresin (whatever that is) but I don't want to buy either and then find my PH goes off the scale or any of my other water parameters

Here's the first link

And the second

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance

isnt polyresin a form of plastic? i dont think plastic can effect ph and so on

I have no idea. The labels in store said they were marble and coral which is why I didn't buy either there and then. The marble one did look like marble and the coral one did look and feel like coral!! I know coral can affect the PH which is why I thought I'd start a discussion on here before laying out the cash

Tty google it!! Think Coral increases PH but im assuming plastic dorsnt effect it as there are lots if things that go in a fish tank which are plastic so im thinking you should be ok with it. However, id Google it first just in case!!

tried googling and yes, marble can have an effect on PH the same as coral.

Okay, I think I'm gonna walk away from these ornaments. I don't trust the supplier and my gut feeling is "don't go there"

Cheers guys :)

They're just plastic, they will have no effect whatsoever and they are designed specifically for aquarium use so go ahead!

I agree with Sadguppy, they are stated to be polyresin (plastic) and are completely inert in water. A real chunk of coral like that would be far more expensive anyway - to grow a piece that size would take ages, and it's not legal to import a piece chipped off a reef somewhere, so that gives you a clue it's not real.

I never thought of it that way to be honest. Real marble would be much more in price too. I may go back and have another look. I'm trying to keep the tank as natural as possible and I could see either of these working well in my tank :)

If you are going to pets@home soon you can ask the people or research it. This pet store is the curant place im going to now :good:

I wouldn't trust any of the staff in my store to tell me the truth! They are more concerned with money than fish welfare (sorry if that statement isn't allowed Mods :look: )

Livestock is an entirely different matter and although I appreciate you may prefer to give your money to a local independent, you aren't going to find dodgy decor in a national chain.

They should really call them 'coral look' and 'marble look' as that's what they are, poly-resin aquarium ornaments that look like coral and marble.

bogwood is terrible for dropping your PH. I've just added a new piece and my PH has fallen from 6.8-7.0 to about 6. It's barely registering a colour at all.

Mind you, it's doing me a favour as the slight ammonia I have at the moment is being turned into ammonium which is less toxic
