Hello all. I'm new to this forum and need a little help figuring out what's going on in my tank. Some specs first:
ammonia and nitrite 0. Nitrate <40. 75 gallon with fluval 406  canister and planted mainly with anubias and ferns. This tank has been up and running for about a year.

About a month ago something happened in my tank where about half of the fish died. I attributed this to a possible decimation of biologic filtration when I cleaned the filter. I wrongly assumed there was enough bacteria in the gravel and tank  to give filter and media a good cleansing. I went through a new bacteria bloom and all the fish that survived (3 yo-yo loaches, 2 German rams,2 bolivian rams, 1 boesmani rainbow and 7 cardinal tetras) all seem fined and never even looked stressed at all. The Germans are supposed to be very sensitive and they seemed fine the whole time.

After waiting for all numbers to get back to normal I started to try to add new fish. I have tried several times and any new fish I add died within 24 hours, I am completely perplexed. Is it possible there is some type of disease that my old fish lived through and now have immunity to? Could my test kits be wrong but then why would my old fish seem fine and thriving?

The outflow is providing plenty of surface agitation so I don't think there is an oxygen problem.I always introduce the new fish very slowly add little amounts of tank water into the bags and letting temp acclimate.
Any thoughts?

Do you always get your fish from the same place? There could be something at your lfs causing the problem.

I have three places I generally buy fish from. 2 chain and one local place. I'm going after work to get some new test kits as the ones I am using are dated. Even so if lets say the ammonia or nitrite is high how is it possible that my old fish don't seem to be affected. Especially the rams, which can be sensitive fish. Is it possible they built up some type of immunity to the toxicity? Is that even possible?
