I'll own up now - I am a complete idiot. I know this.

Having bought a bigger tank last weekend, I've been gradually painting it and generally faffing in my little spare time in the evenings. Today it was time to move the old tank (160 litre) to the smaller space so the new tank (240 litre) can go where the old one was.

A sensible person would have waited until tomorrow when their boyfriend would be here to help. A sensible person would also have emptied the tank, or at least taken out a significant proportion of the water. As mentioned above, I am not a sensible person.

I managed to shuffle it most of the way across, then got it wedged slightly (door frame on one side, mantelpiece on another). It was at this point I noticed a steady drip drip off one corner, bottom of the tank/top of the cabinet. I grabbed a bucket and started taking out water, and the water stopped dripping within a few minutes. I still don't know if this was water that had spilled over the top and gathered in the corner, or a leak.

I shuffled it back into its final resting place (hopefully just a pun) and have left it without refilling the water (it's about 70% full). There have been no further drips. I'll refill it completely tomorrow when there's daylight and preferably a responsible adult* around to take charge. Obviously if it starts leaking again when I refill it I know I've messed up big time. But if it doesn't, may I still have done some damage? Or weakened it? Should I be expecting it to explode like that tank in the Shanghai shopping mall? Would I be ok to continue using it, or is it time to give up and leave the mixing of water and electricity to grown ups*?

*I'm 35 years old.

Unless your tank has been exposed to UV radiation, is made of acrylic and gradually been worn away by extreme temperatures then I would say the chances of it going the way as the mall aquarium in Shanghai are pretty low :good: .
You could however have stressed the tank and caused a leak, sometimes leaks will only actually leak if there is enough water in the tank to exert the pressure needed for the water to work its way out, if that makes sense.
If there are no immediately obvious cracks or breaks then the only way to find out is to fill her up and keep a close eye out, it would of course be preferable to perform this test with no livestock or decor in but I understand that will most likely be impossible in your situation unless the larger tank is ready.

Look on the bright side, at least you have a new tank to fall back on :)

Thanks, so basically - refill it, and if there are no drips I've probably got away with it this time, but next time don't be so stupid? Phew!

Yes that pretty much what I would recommend, try to refill it when you know you are going to be around for a while to keep an eye on it. I wouldn't say stupid, you just got carried away, happens to all of us.
