Hi all,

I'm going on holiday for a month soon. I have 5 tanks, three 25l betta tanks and two 65l tetra tanks,  one with neons and one with glowlights, and I just have a few questions about tank maintenance while I'm away.

I've been teaching my little brother how to maintain them but school would have restarted by the time I leave and he won't have time to do a whole lot. He's basically on feeding and removing casualties duty.

Will the tanks be ok without water changes for the whole 4 weeks I'm gone? I'm planning on doing huge water changes and a big clean up the day before I leave and as soon as I get back. Both tetra tanks are planted, the bettas aren't. One of the betta tanks has serious evaporation issues since it doesn't have a lid, only mesh over the top, and I have to top it up every few days. My brother will be topping it up but I don't really trust him to actually do water changes.

How often should he be feeding them?

Should I be doing anything else before I leave and should he be doing anything else while I'm gone?

He lives with me so he shouldn't forget to feed them. He's also been told to call me if there's any problems but I want to make it as easy as possible for him since he's doing it as a favour

Thanks.

I have found leaving them with minimal care is better than leaving them with someone who doesnt really know what they are doing. The less feeding there is the less waste the fish produce so the less water change needed.

I just got back from a week in hospital and the fish got nothing during that time and are now back on minimal feeding, which i will slowly build up over the next few days. All my tanks are very understocked i will add, which also helps with the not needing heaps of maintenance

Your fish will be fine. I only feed my fish on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, so more or less once every two days and i've never had a problem, it helps keep the tank clear, as less food = less waste and also the fact that they eat algea too means my tank is always clean. Regards to water changes it should be fine, i was recently in hospital for 7 weeks and i never did a water change during that time for obvious reasons and i didn't have any casualties.

Don't worry! Enjoy your time away
Merry Christmas.
