The tank I bought came with a light for the top

Is it ok to leave the light on all day?

What I've been doing is leaving it off during the day; then turning it on once it gets dark outside. When I go to bed I turn it off (so it's on about 5 hours)

He seems to be happier with it on; I just don't want to bother him with it on all the time...

Input would be great. Thanks :)

Depending on the watts of your light it can make the water to warm. I keep mine on during the day usually since I have live plants. Algae grows wonderfully in a tank with light from my personal experience.

I'm not sure of the wattage (bulb came with the tank kit); but so far it hasn't raised the temp

It depends on the bulb type, too, more than anything else.
If it's incandescent, I disagree with leaving it on for that long - It'll raise the temperature on the surface of the water.
If it's fluorescent, it won't heat the water any. :)
