Hi all.

I'm wanting to get a 2nd tank for a betta but am limited on space. I have a cellar kitchen and was thinking about getting a half hex tank and putting it in my cellar window. With it being a cellar it doesn't get much sun light (prob about 8 inch at top of window). If i get a black background for tank and a voile for window would this be ok?

Thanks

Well i was thinking if I get a black background its white on the bit facing towards the window and white reflects heat right? Lol

I think will be ok cos most of window is facing the brick wall lol

I was also interested as to how many litres it is. It's 39cm all by 45cm wide and 25 deep and I worked it out at about 50 litres is this correct anybody?

Should be okay as long as it's out of direct sunlight, as if it was you may have trouble with keeping the temperature steady and algae problems. Can't say for certain that it'll be fine (though I imagine it would be), it's just one of those things you have to try out. Live on the edge! :D

50 litres is pretty big for a betta tank. You could easily get away with having a few other species in there too.

Dunno if i worked it out right bit of a spaz when it comes to maths but somebody is selling this tank for a fiver with ornaments and a filter! bargain of the day!

i have a 3ft tank a good 3-4 feet from my window but last summer the heat from the sun raised the temperature a good 8C :/ thankfully I only lost 1 fish

The window doesnt get alot of light in as only about 6-8 inch of the window is actually exposed to day light lol and i plan on getting a voile for the summer which will stop some of the light and i will be getting a black background which is white on the back and white reflects the light so should help against the sun heating the tank (what little sun we have in the UK that is lol)

Also ive worked it out from the calculator on here that its 10 gallons, could i have 6 rummynose tetras in with a Betta? If not any suggestions would be welcome :)

Rummys need space to swim, they are constantly on the move.

This months favorite are Ember Tetras! I've got 10 in a 35 litre with 3 Honey Gouramis, so a figher and a dozen Embers would look nice enough in a 10 gal :D

Your looking at Nano fish, nothing that grows over 2cm ideally. Lots of Rasbora fit the bill, and celestial pearl danios are nice too. Green neons could also work.

I like rasboras and saw some spotty ones on another post which were beautiful. Are they Chilli rasboras? I currently have some harlequins. Only seen harlequins in all fish shops I been in too no others :(

Some of my healthiest tanks were or are in front of north facing windows and all of them grew Vals. very well.

How wide is the window? Because u could get 1 of those blackout roller blinds u only need to lower it to block out where the sun gets too then so you will still get natural light in there without the direct sunlight. My mum has got 1 and you don't get any heat come trough it at all.

Since we're talking about stocking options as well, are pork chop rasboras considered "micro"?

You will probably have to worry less about the tank in that window than the fact that it's in the kitchen. Room temperature can fluctuate greatly in a kitchen and this will keep changing the temperature of the tank which is very stressful for the fish. You will need to use your exhaust fan if you use the stove to even boil a cup of water for tea. Baking in the oven also generates a lot of heat.
