My little girl has been given a small tank and two goldfish. The tank is "established" ?? ie the fish are about a year old and arrived in a bag with there own water. I've put them in the tank with some fresh treated water. There's a pump. instructions from previous owner is feed them twice a day and change water regularly at 1/3 every week. What else do I need to do to ensure we don't shorten there lives too much.

Goldfish belong in ponds not small tanks. Sorry but the chances of them living past a few weeks is very unlikey. The best thing you can do is do water changes and make sure not to overfeed and such. But am against goldfish in tanks.

How small is the tank? Really you want around 100 litres per fish as goldies get huge and are very messy. In a small tank they will have very short, sad lives indeed. Better to buy a heater and get a betta fish, and put the goldies in a pond.

I take your point on board but they have lasted a year so far. Hopefully they'll last a bit longer.

Maybe I've made a bad start here. I wonder are they goldfish at all. Let me describe them. Gold in colour one with big wavy fins normal eyes the other with big bug eyes and big wavy fins. I'll take a photo if that would help.

Photos help.

They should live for ten years at least. That is like having a one year old bear cramped in a cage and defending it by saying they have 'lasted a year so far' and will hopefully last a bit longer. You may think this comparison to be extreme but in all truth it is the same principle. No offence meant

Your fish sound like some kind of fancies, have a look at the common breeds and see if you recognise the kind you have.
