I've always admired these fish in magazines and books. I've never actually seen one in the flesh though.

I'm going to set my next tank up for a pair of these. I'll get a small group and hopefully get a pair.

has anyone got these or kept them who can give me some advice based on their experience and are they best kept alone or can certain tankmates be kept?

My cichlid experience is oscars, moambique mouthbrooders, convicts, discus, angels etc in the past and I have a very fesity 8 inch cobra pike occupying one tank at the moment

Very easy to look after, can be mixed with other fish but as with all cichlids it depends on each fishes personality. Sadly I just lost my big male (he was killed by my red texas that I had divided in the other half of the tank). Mine lived with his mate (a king kong parrot) and some of their offspring as well as a few smaller cichlids.

I am doing just what you want to do at the moment. I have six Synspilum from 3 different sources and am hoping to get a pair from these. At the moment they are in with four very small GT's and some Clown loach. I have them in a 48 x 18 x 24 until I have set up my bigger tank which measures 60 x 24 x 36 (180 gallon). I will post some pics tomorrow if you like. At the moment they are between 2 and 3.5 inches and some are starting to colour up a bit. They are very skittish while young, but loose the shyness the older they become. Be very careful where you source the fish from though simonas as there are a lot of hybrids out there. It will be interesting if you go ahead with this as we could compare and advise each other along the way.

I'm definately into this at some point soon just need to source another largeish tank. I'm collectin three three foot tanks tomorrow for other stuff (breeding etc) so will make space for them first..

Until I get mine keep me posted how yours get on T Bag :good:
