Just bought my father a 55 gallon starter kit, and he wants to keep a pair of oscars, like he did when I was little. I got him plain black gravel, and the set came with a Top Fin HOB Filter (it's a TOPFIN set). We are setting up the tank together, and here is what I was thinking:

Two Oscars (2)
Bristlenose Pleco (1)
Siamese Algae Eaters (2-3)
Black Gravel
Black Background
Large Piece of Driftwood with Anubias, Java Fern, and/or Java Moss attached
Marimo Balls (4 to 5) sitting in the emptier areas of the tank, against the black substrate

It's simple, it's good green and black contrast, and those plants may all be OK with the Oscars.

Any thoughts or species suggestions? I won't use Java Fern unless I get a good specimen.

I'll have him dose with excel only, every other day, and clean the tank once a month. The tank has to be low cost and low maintenance for him.

i know you have oscars in there but the SAE's get very very aggressive. and nippy.

won't two oscars be too big for a 55gallon tank? or are you planning to upgrade when the time comes?
also are you getting albino or black oscars?

if black they'll be camoflauged by the background and gravel and only see their orange markings, just a though could try blue background, and sand *not black* or very large round gravel
