I'm in the planning stage (read: finding money, space, getting dh used to the idea) of getting a new tank. Among other fishies, I'd really like an angel. This plan is months away from happening but without going overboard and getting a 75 gal tank which is not possible in this house, what's the smallest gallon size recommended & fair for angels?

I'm obviously going to do the research before I do anything but for any angel fans out there - what do you think a new angel owner needs to know?

Angels can get pretty big, around 6". They also need a tall tank. I have a pair in a 30 gal right now. I wouldn't put them in anything smaller than a 20 gal. If your planning a community tank make sure you don't put the Angels in with smaller fish like Neons and Cardinals, it's possible that they will get eaten.

An angel eating neons or cardinals isn't always true, maybe for a wild caught angel...If It's possible for you to get a 55 gallon then do it, you'll have more choice of fish to put in it...trust me your going to want a bigger tank anyways in the future....but like what leafs said you could put an angel on a 20 or 30 gallon as long as it is atleast 18" or higher.....

So a 29 would be ok? I was eyeing one last week and it looked as if it would be the biggest I could reasonably fit in this house.

Space is an issue because currently in the livingroom we have a 3.25 foot guinea pig cage, a massive community cage for 5 budgies and the 2 fishie tanks. :D
(not to mention the 2 cats and 5 humans who also tend to occupy space but aren't caged. yet.)

...but I really liked the look of the 29g. I just wanted to make sure that it would be able to handle the fish I'm thinking of getting.
yay!!

I think that would be fine for a pair of angels. You'll be hooked on angels in no time. They really are wonderful fish with tons of personality. You just have to be careful what you put with them because some fish are notorious for nipping their fins. For example I would stay away from mixing them with any kind of barb.
