Tank Ecosystem

Well your fish are doing what come naturally to them. Which is as you say great to watch.

Its good to hear that you are growing them in a near natural environment.
Less work for the owner and probably happier fish :)

Plants are the basis of the biological system, and algea is essentially a plant for the purposes of gathering energy (and the algea needs the CO2 More than the plants, it relies on rapid photosynthesis to build up the sugars to burn overnight) , in order to support more fish you need to be kind to plants and algea.

In highschool I had a biology teacher who talked of a tank he had seen some years ago, a huge like 900 gallon tank filled with greenwater and a few small carp, the water was then pumped into hydroponic beds were they grew soybeans, the soybeans were then harvested and fed to the carp.

Sorry may be I'm getting this all wrong or may be i am not.

For me an ecosystem is self sustaining. With little of no influence from another source. By adding CO2 you are feeding the plants. So why not forget the whole idea and feed the fish as well. That will increase the population of fish.

Well, every ecosystem has to get going, after a while the plants would have grown and the fish population would be making its own CO2 and it wouldnt be a problem, but in the beggining chances are his plants will be starveing for it, you have to get the ball rolling somehow, thats all. Also with airation, its nescessary but it takes out something that the plants need (CO2) its something to watch for.

Speaking of refugiums...has anyone or can they be used on a freshwater set-up? They sound perfect for sustaining a population of live food and/or broods of fry.

of course they can be used, you just need a mobile food source, like daphnia. Bloodworms cxan also seek refuge in deep gravel or a muddy bottom.

Hi Peter,

Well good luck with the extention to your house and further more than with the development of your project.

You asked where abouts ont eh planet i am? Well I am in Johannesburg - South Africa. Where do you stay?

I tend to agree with your comment about an ecosystem being selfsustaining, and at the same time the other arguments about startign the whole thing off witha bit of help also seems true. The way i approach this concept (and correct me if i'm wrong), is that it is like a giant puzzle. There are plenty pieces, infact to try and incorporate all of them in the begining will be depressing. The way i see it is one starts it off, like you say perhaps with a few plants and then as the various balances are reached, so the next piece of the puzzle can be added. I believe that the secret is patience and time. In attempting to create a natural ecosystem in a closed / controlled environment is a matter of trial and error to a large extent. I think it is something that can be played with and like i said the fun is in adding the next piece of the puzzle once the balance fromt eh existing pieces has been established.

Qwikimpss and opcn chat about refugiums, this is a great idea. Do you guys already use this method of feeding/brooding and if so what is your main drive behind chooseing this method to regular feeding with flakes etc?
