Im getting some Central American Cichlids for the first time and am curious as to what type of tank decorations I should get for them. Is there anything I can get to replicate their natural environment or some type of decorations that they do not like? Open to any suggestions. Also should I use gravel or sand?

Sand or fine gravel. As for decor that's up to you. Rocks, driftwood, clay flower pots and plastic or very hardy live plants are all good.

If you're trying to replicate their natural habitat 100% then decide on what species you are planning on keeping then research on the net to work out if they need sand, rocks, plants, wood, etc. and go from there.

As long as the water parameters are correct for the fish and there basic needs are met and there's nothing too outlandish in the tank, ie. neon gravel, flourescent ornaments, etc. then you'll achieve a 'natural' looking tank no problems even if you can't recreate everything 100% :)
