Has anyone used a normal kitchen sponge to clean the sides of the tank? Obviously a new one fresh from the pack. Wasn't sure if there were any chemicals or additives from the manufacturer on certain sponges. These are the blue Scotchbrite brand I believe.

You being serious? Those are safe? I used one once to clean some child marks off the wall. Took some of the paint off!
I'm dead serious, used them for years in all of my tanks...the best hard-water and algae remover from glass I've ever seen...and won't scratch the glass

Just be certain to use the ORIGINAL. There's kitchen and bath ones that contain chemicals, the original does not

Get the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (ORIGINAL, no chemicals)...works great
"MR. CLEAN"
MAGIC ERASER - 2 Pack!

*Eliminates hard to get stains without using an abrasive
*Contains proprietary foam substance that is activated with water
*Cleans porcelain, ceramic and walls with crayon, scuff marks, and hard to clean stains

I’ve just looked to see if these are available in the uk and ebay has them but the description (above) says “foam substance”…are they the same thing..?

Yes, same thing...it's not really as much a "substance" as it is a "structure"....

Do you use this and then WC or does it matter? I typically "wipe down the walls" when the water is lowest, right before I start to refill.

I do exactly the same...you can reach all areas of the glass this way

I use the same thing. They work better than anything I've tried. An old credit card is a pretty good second place, though. Even removes black brush with no problems.

"Foam substance" kind of remind me of "food product" or "cheese food." If the package has to tell you it's food, it probably isn't.

The same is not true of "foam substance." I can personally attest that this product is both foam and a substance.
