I was wondering how accurate are tank caluculators. Mine tank always looked bigger than most 40 gallons even 40 gallon breeds. So I typed my dimension into a tank calculator and it came up with my tank being a 50 gallon. So what do you think?

how big is your tank?

they all seem to tell ya different, it can be a lil confusing!

the total volume of air that a tank holds is bigger than the total volume of water a tank holds.
this is because
A ) we do not fill the tank to the very top
B ) the substrate, decor and fish all displace water

therefore a 50G tank may only hold 40G of water.

Hi ARXC08, most tanks calculators use the same formula for calculating the gallons for your tank. The formula is calculated using the outside dimensions of your tank in inches. The lenght" X the width" X the height" and then deviding the product by 231. So a tank measuring 48" X 12" X 24" = 13824 devided by 231 = 59.8 gallons or rounded out to 60 gallons.

My tank measure 36" X 18" X 17". When following th formula by fishing4exotics my tank is a 48 gallons. 36 X 18 X 17= 11016 divided by 231 = 47.7, so can the subtrate and not filling all the way make around 8 gallons difference?

I get the same:

Surface area: 648sq.inches
Tank volume: 180.55 litres 47.67 gal(US) 39.73 gal(imp/UK)

and again with 1 inch substrate and water filled to 1 inch from top:

Water volume: 159.31 litres 42.06 gal(US) 35.05 gal(imp/UK)

You can experiment with different substrate depths and water levels using a lot of the online calculators including the one in my sig. It doesn't account for glass thickness though, but if you wanted to be that accurate then you would just put in the inside measurements of course.
