Hello. I am new to Tanganyikan Cichlids. I have never had any type of chilid before. I read these little guys like snail shells. Can I use any kind of shell? Can i use sea shells from the beach? If not were do i get some snail shells. I: have no idea about these fish so please help me.

hi, tanganyikan shell dwellers are what you are tanking about i beleive, they are great little fish, they do live in shells, but its best to buy them from your pet shop becuase using shells from a beach means then will probably decompose in a tropical freshwater tank. i would use a sand substrate becuase they will dig there shells into the sand.

any more questions please ask

http://shelldwellers.com is a good resource. Certain seashells are fine (must be not be too big or too small and shaped in a curved way) but I still wouldn't use ones you picked up from the beach without first cleaning them up. I keep a small group of L stappersi (fish in my av) and they can be quite territorial and aggressive depending on the species. Most are best kept in a species only tank and are best suited to an aquarium 20 gallons or more and long. They need the floor space more than they need height.
