Taking Fish Home

My LFS is a bit out of my way. It's 15 minutes away, which doesn't seem like a long time, but I have to pay for my gas with a very meager paycheck. So, here's my question: When you get your fish from the store, how long is it safe to keep them in the bag? I planned to go today on my way to work, take it to work, then bring it home. It would be in the bag for about 4-5 hours. Is this okay? I'm kind of worried because it's a dwarf puffer that I'm buying today...

Ive read you should keep them in a big for a maximum of three hours but you could probably manage 4....

You would need to take them into work rather than leaving them in the hot car. When you get them inside, find something that you can set the bag in and still have it stand up. The undo the top so they are getting fresh air in the bag. Then simply reseal it before you leave to go home.

As for the time they can stay in the bag, I'm sure they could go a couple days depending on the size of the fish and the size of the bag. People buy fish online and have them shipped. Even shipped overnight, those would be in the bag for at least 12 to 15 hours.

Yeah, I always bring them into work. I work at an ice cream parlor and the store is always at a constant 70 degrees. Thanks!

Forgive me if I missed something, but why don't you just go to your LFS on your way home?

My dad kept a bagged swordtail in the car for 5 hours once, and she was fine. I wasn't thrilled with him, though... heh. But yeah, an ice cream parlor should be okay, I'd think.

No, I work from 4-10 on weekends and the store closes at 9. Thanks for the imput, though.

4-5 hours is no big deal when you consider fish are shipped acroos the country bagged for 24 hours. I regularly buy & sell fish at auctions, 12 hours is no problem, out of more than 700 bags we have maybe 3 or 4 floaters, and they are usually improperly bagged, or obviously sick to begin with.
