I found this guy out on the play equipment in from of our home, nearly scared my 3 year old out of her shorts. It's a broad winged katydid and they are quite common here, but for obvious reasons they are seldom seen. They are harmless and will in fact climb around on you contently for as long as they can go without wanting to eat. I had a good time shoeing my daughter that not all bugs are scary (she's been bee-stung 3 times this summer so she has a bit of a phobia of insects right now).

I apologize for the cruddiness of the photos, I was trying to shoot with one hand and hold or catch the bug with the other.

what is it ?
 
i didnt mean it in a nasty way or any thing was just wondering if it was a stick insect or grass hopper or locust

They're katydids, and as far as I can tell they're most closely related to grasshoppers/locusts. They make a call in the evenings that is similar to a cricket though, their name comes from an attempt to emulate their call. This one was at least 4X larger than any others I've seen personally.

Notice the diseased eye on the second shot?
