my male CTs tail has a couple of broken bits on the end of 2 of his rays, it looks like has been bitten, how do i know if hes been biting his own tail, im away from home most of the day and hes quite inactive when i do see him, but its more when there is lower light, so hes sleepy. ive not seen him biting his tail.

Well, is your betta alone? I don't think that he would take chunks out of his own tail, but I could be wrong. The only other thing that I can think of that could be going on is fin/tail rot. See if the places where the rays have been taken off start to become bigger holes in the fin.

yes hes on his own, he does get to flare at his neighbour now and then when i take the bit of paper seperating their view of each othe away.
he dont have tail rot. ive heard of beta male biting their own tails before, some sort of genetic behvioural trait.

Mine does it too, if you look on the thread I posted just before yours (Fin Nipping), Stang and Zafirah offered suggestions and a website. :)
