 When i do my water changes i stich a hose in my tank and the other end out of my front room window. i then suck the window end a few times until water starts to flow throught it. YUK!!!!

This is gross but dont have any other way to do this. I have no pumps or anything.

So come on guys, how do you do yours and what do you use???

I use a gravel vac, just plunge it up&down a few times and hey presto the water starts flowing! :p

I Dont like the idea of fish poop breath!

I have one that starts with a rubber bulb that starts the syphoning when you squeeze it. Its much more hygienic, you can get diseases from fish water. Yuk

Hi! :D This is the easiest way I've learned. Hold your thumb over the "window" end. Dip the "tank" end in the water till it's full, then hold it up in the air and let your thumb off the other end. After the water runs down the tube, replace your thumb and repeat steps until your hose is full. Once it is full, stick the hose back in the water, the other end out the window, and remove your thumb. It show flow freely as long as you don't let the hose rise out of the water. Also, it only works if your "tank" end is higher than your "window" end. :D

Same here... works great every time! I'm scared to get diseases from my fish so I don't suck the water out. Too often you hear about people getting sick because of that method...

Its gotta be the good old fashion suck method for me, it even works for syphoning petrol  :alien:  (don't try that kids).

My vac is a pain in the wossit to get goin. :sly: If you use a clear piece of tubing u can see the water coming and take it out your mouth before u get a mouthful!

Sticking the tube out the window sounds a great idea no need for buckets, but i live in a 1st floor flat don't think the neighbours gonna apprieciate fish poo water all over them

Get a longer hose dude.

Ive been feelin rough for a bit and wondered if this method was BAD for u.

Think ill get one of those pump things as well.

I don't completely understand people's objection to siphoning with your mouth. Even when I siphoned a really small 2 gal tank (with a correspondingly small siphon) you put the large end in the tank, you put the small end down in the bucket near the floor. You only have to suck long enough until the water in the tube gets over the hump and to the same level as the water in the tank. After that, gravity does all the work. I find I only have to give it one quick suck. I won't claim that I have never gotten some water in my mouth, but with a little practice, I think I have only done it once. And I wipe the tube off before using it again -- unless you have a severely compromised immune system, a tiny amount of aquarium bacteria etc. should not affect you. If you are really anxious about it, gargle with some hydrogen peroxide -- that'll kill most any buggie in your mouth.

its a hose, ergo it is flexible, ergo you can get it full of water right next to your tank, cover the "window" end, stick the other end in the tank, and walk whereever you want to, get the "window" end below the water level and let go, bam syphon working.

Another option, one end in the tank, hold the window end above the waterlevel. Make sure there is an adequate amount of tube/hose that bows beneath the waterlevel. Take a pitcher of water and pour this into the hose- this water should never make it into the tank, just fill up some of this slack. You may notice bubbles in the tank (some air will be pushed through the hose into the tank. After you have some hose length filled, you can lower the end and wham- syphon working.

hope this helps.
