Well I bought the 10m clear hose I was talking about.i am so glad I did.i don't know why I didn't do it before.
I just done a 50% water change.it took 10 mins to empty water out straight into sink with no pumps etc.fantastic.my cichlid tank got emptied straight out front door in about 3 mins.

how did you do it in the end? Did you just attach the hose to the end of the syphon?

It works with syphon but I just used the bare hose for emptying water.my back gave me a round of applause for that one

yeah ... I'm hoping my back will thank me too if I go down the same route. I'm gonna give it a try, thanks :)

Well worth it.no probs.got the hose on eBay for 14.99

okay, thanks. I know B & Q sell clear tubing so I'll price it up there first. I hate ebay

If not for long hoses, gravity and pumps I would have given up a lot of my tanks a long time ago. I use the python hoses which are clear and quite flexible and come with garden hose size fixtures on each end. These are removable. A lot of the clear tubing is not so flexible, and this does matter.

On the pumps I use pvc glue to attach a garden hose connector to the output side. You then have a long siphon with no pump, a long pump driven hose that can work to empty or to refill a tank.
