I'm thinking of getting 4 of these to hopefully get a pair in a five foot tank. Has anyone ever kept these? I've read a bit about them and searched this forum. They are spectacular looking fish in the books but would you recommend keeping them?

what would you recommend as any/if any tankmates?

you can have a good range of cichlids with them as they are a mild mannerd fish but what did you have in mind?

I wouldn't keep any more cichlids with them but was wondering more about an ornate birchir or fire eels. I have these in other tanks living ok with my oscar

I would half expect for the eel to be too soft bodied but I suppose that getting the fish at a small size will help if they grow up with an eel.

my fire eel is about 14 inches and is very boisterous with the oscar its with and the smaller tyre track is the same although I see what you mean about the soft body

the only reason that I worry about the soft boidied fish is that veja species are well known for coming in out of left feild with a bit of agression, it isn't like and overnight thing it is just a random minute they decide that they want to kill something.
