hi all i need some advice on a red head cichlid or synspillus. i understand that a female redhead will grow to be a MAXIMUM of 12" what is the avarage length of these fish. and what about the tank size..thanks all

or any information about the average length of a jaguar cichlid or jack dempsey and information on the tank size...thanks :D

with jags anything less than a 125 is a waste of time. because in the end that is what you are going to need

JDs are okay for a 55 but they espically a male will take over the tank as their own and with a average size of 8-9 inches.

heres a general rule that I learned a long time ago and it should help you out. take the MAXIMUM adult size, give 2 inches to the front and 2 inches to the rear and that will give you the minimum tank width that you need to keep your fish.

are you talking about a pair of jds? and uk gallons or us gallons. tank dimentions are 48"x18"x16" ish

okay a couple points to be made.

1 a pair of JDs could go in your tank but they would be the only fish in the tank.

2. when most people talk about gallons for a tank they are talking US gallons. yes I know that this is a UK site but it is just makes thing more simple to use US gallons vs UK gallons. don't ask me why but I can say its been that way as long as I have been around here.

3. we've had the discussion about the syspillum before. so I am not going to go in to that one. but I will tell you that the answer is the same for Jags as well.

but if your interested in Jags, perhaps you should look into their smaller cousins:

Parachromis Motaguensis, Parachromis Lossille, Parachromis Fredricsthalli

with my personal preference being for the mota. a red tiger mota male is really a sight to see.

though in your tank as an adult there would be only one fish and it would be the Parachromis.

I have a red head cichlid, he is about 8-9 inches now, purchased at about 2 inches. Very beautiful fish has a red purple head. He has grown up with red hook silver dollars, convicts ,blue acara's, a,pleco and a large angelfish in a 100 gallon tank. This fish is peacful, but is clearly the ruler of the tank, for sure. This fish has about the same temperment as a 13 inch oscar I once had. This clearly does not mean all are like this though, unfortunately fish seem to be pot luck, all the reading and research sometimes just doesn't work out. They just have their own personalities.

I understand that redheads can not live with each other and are hard to pair up as a mating pair. If the male does not except the female he will kill it. I have never tried this nor have had more than one, only repeating what I have been told. I also understand that the males reach 12-13 inches and females slightly smaller.

I feed this red head , wardly cichlid pelletes, kelp pellets by omega, and 8 veggie mix by HBH. They are omnivores.

If it is at all posible, I recommend mixing any cichlids with other fish while small juvenille fish and allowing to grow toghether, this has always worked well for me. Large cichlids of an aggressive nature also need large tanks, bigger is better.
