Syno. Multipunctatus grow to about 6" and aren't cheap, i doubt if anyone will give you one. I suggest you go out and spend your own cash..

no.i dont expect any1 to give 1 to me but you never know who has fry they cant hold and can give or sell them cheap.

as for asking alot,i dont like the basic size of the syno.ocellifer that much and the multi is smaller and look clean not like some of them that are like off colored looking.and i only have a 40 gallon at the time which is heavily planted and has tons of large rocks wihich i built structures and caves with

but how big do ocefellers get. i read about 8" but it didnt say how big it got in a aquarium

Synodontis ocellifer are supposed to be able to attain about 10" although i have not seen one bigger than about 8" myself. If you want a small syno suitable for a 40G then go for Synodontis Petricola, Nigriventris or Shoutendeni. However, i doubt if anyone will be willing to give theirs away!

Well i got mine for £15 before discount although i have seen them for £9.90 although their colouration wasnt as nice as mine. I currently have 4 Syno. "Dwarf" petricolas and 1 "True" petricola, they are one of my favourite looking catfish and seem to do really well in a small group, despite a little squabbling between what i think are the 2 males.

If you can afford them they are a wonderful catfish, just make sure your water parameters are correct for them, you want to look up info on lake tanganyikan synodontis which will tell you they like higher pH and hardness, luckily very similar to my tap water so they do very well, you want to be aiming for a pH of 7.5-8.2, with other fish to match this if you can.

To answer your list...

1. Varies alot - find out from your local stockists and also look online at aquabid etc.
2. for a 40 gallon depends on other stocking but 4-5 easily.

4. As Synos go they are a bit more rare than the multipuncatus, but seem fairly easy to get hold of in England if you know where to look.
5. They are VERY slow growers, bought 2 of mine at about 1.25" and they are only about 2" now. The other 2 are a pair i bought at about 2" and are about 2.5" now. They shouldnt get above 3-3.5"

those prices are good....
IF a store roung here gets them - they are sold for about £35 for a 2" specimine - and they are hardly ever seen
