Hi just wondering about some new Mollys I put in my tank today. There's two Dalmatian 1 male and 1 female which have been together a while now as the female is soon to drop a batch of full Dalmatians soon. Now as of today there's been x2 female gold dust mollys and one male sword tail introduced into the tank. Will all the different types inter-breed or does the swordtail require it's own type?

Any info or experience much appreciated :)

I don't think they can interbreed, but I'm not 100% sure. Just wait for a few more replies to make sure :good:

Swordtails Can’t interbreed with Mollys. different types of Mollys /colour can breed with each other

You may end up with a rather random looking molly!

The swordtail I already have is rather odd looking so I think any off-spring it has will also be similar. I'll get a picture up soon.

Yeah good idea. All my fish at the moment have at least 2 females to every male, I thought the swordtail would fit in with the other mollys but I know better now. I'll keep my eye out for some fish lady's for him

As was said by Fish48, a molly and a swordtail simply cannot cross.
Most mollies we see in a local fish store are really not any pure species but are a cross among 2 or more of the more common wild species. The same can be said of most swordtails you will find in a fish shop, they are crosses of common wild swordtail and platy species. The Xiphophorus and poeciliids are not able to cross to each other. Xiphophorus includes a few dozen distinct species of swordtails and platies while poeciliids include over 20 species of wild type mollies along with other fish like the limias, endlers and guppies.
The ones generally considered poeciliids do not cross with xiphophorus. Even the resulting hybrids of mollies and swordtails found in pet shops cannot cross.
