Do the females have to be the same colour/type of swordtail as the males in order to breed? I have a black/olive male and an orange male and I'm thinking of getting a female to go with them.

no it wont matter,. i have a female marble swordtail and a male tuxedo swordtail and they mate.i used to have an orange female and a neon female but they died and they gave birth to his babies but the babies dissappeared so it will be fine if they mate.

Ok thanks! Will 2 males and 1 female cause fighting?

The males will chase her constantly and she'll hide a lot, get stressed and possibly ill. The minimum is 2 females for each male.

if they are to go in your tank on your sig, looks like youre fully stocked anyway. I wouldnt put more into a 50 litre.

Males will breed with any females from shop fish.

Swords are very territorial fish though and need large tanks, males should have around a square foot of surface area per male, and you need a ratio of 2 females to each male to reduce the hassle from the males over the females.

Ok thanks :D I guess that's a no go area then until I get a bigger tank!

Watch out with your swordtails though - if they start fighting a lot you'll need to separate them.
