I am thinking of switching from Stress Coat to Seachem Prime and was wondering if it makes any difference to the fish if you just switch from one to the other of if it is best to fade one out and the other one in?

I set up my new tank with Stress Coat but it seems much more expensive than the Seachem Prime and I have also found that the Stress Coat is coating all the suckers for my filter pipework and heater is a film of goo.

Any advice?
Thanks,

I really wouldn't have thought so. It serves a purpose in that it removes chlorine, but it doesn't serve any useful purpose to the fish themselves.

erm kinda dose actually, but not in your circumstances, i know stress coat has something in it thats helps reduce the stress of fish and yes it works. (that will be the goo your on about :) )

but then seachem prime has other products in it that help with other stuff, and may still give you a goo, but then it may not even be the stress coat or seachems that gives a goo? could be something else?

do you have a picture of this goo? as my filter pipe work are covered in a orange coloured stuff that is algae and is 100% impossible to get rid of within the pipes unless you clean your pipes every day.

try it and see if it goes away it wont hurt the fish to change declor as long as it get rid of the chlorine :D

Stress coat supposedly helps with the fishes' own slime coat. The goo that's on the pipework is more than likely algae of some sort, completely unrelated.

I'd still recommend switching to Prime though.

The 'goo' is almost certainly a type of algae that grows on new rubber/plastic in tanks, and nothing to do with your dechlorinator.

You can change straight over, it won't affect your fish at all.

The Goo appeared within about 7 days of the tank being brand new so could have been something to do with the suckers being new or something.  Would algae grow that fast?  I can't take photos until Friday as I am away from home so I will see if it is still there when I get back.

Thanks for all the advice.  I think I will switch to Prime so I can just dose the whole tank each water change with a massive 2 cap fulls each time.  lol

Yes, algae can definitely grow that fast, and if the tank is brand new then that might explain it, as algae can be rife in immature tanks.

How did you cycle the tank?

I used the filter media from my mature tank and the bio rings from another tank I made redundant in my new filter, some gravel and filter washed water from my mature tank & a bottle of Tetra Safe Start and treated the water with Stress Coat.  Not had any ammonia readings in the first 3 weeks so far.  I have the wife check it with the API kit whilst away and a seachem visual indicator in the tank just as a backup in case something goes wrong without warning.

good sounds like you are doing the right thing so far, but yes switching to prime will not effect anything, i cant seen to get rid of this slime even on my mature tank, :S don't bother me as its in the pipes and the flow is still good :D
