Hi I have purchased a bigger cannister filter for my 55 gallon heavily planted tank..My question is can I just hook it up and let it run with the other for a month to build bacteria or could I just take some media from old filter and add to new one,, then disconnect old one. i have a C02 system for my tank and with the plants in tank would it even matter about just switching them out. My tank is an establishe 55 gallon with neons and sterbais along with plants. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the new filter arrived today Thanks

I would add the 2nd filter to the tank and let it mature. You can never have too much filtration.

If you can take the media from the old filter and put it right into the new one, your cycle shouldn't miss a beat.

No harm in running them in parallel either and letting it slowely get up to speed.
