i took my water to work yesterday and checked it and my livebearer tank was fine however my main tank was not so good. not bad but not good. yesterday morning i lost my pearl gourami and now today i have noticed one of my tiger barbs and my betta swimming ok but when they stop they go vertical immediately. i did a 50% water change this morning and have taken out some of the plants that were getting a little brown thinking that may be doing something to the water but am worried now that i am going to lose more fish. can anyone tell me why this is happening and how i can fix it please

Usually that would sound like a swim bladder defficiency. But with it happening to both fish I would be a bit sceptical. Have you been spraying any chemicals near your fish?

Can we get your water stats? Why was your water bad?

Thanks

no chemicals sprayed near the fishies. my nitrates, ammonia and nitrites were up a little. i cant remember in ppm but all three were registering in between the 2nd and 3rd colours on the colour chart. i have put an ammo ball in the water to help with the ammonia and did a water change with the aqua cycle. i have been struggling a little with slightly cloudy water for a while. first happened about 3 weeks ago but that was my own fault as i wasnt thinking and put a new filter in and took the old one out. i did a 50% water change then plus added the old filter and that sorted that problem out. the only change since then was 2 days ago i switched from gravel to sand. the water took a while to settle however yesterday afternoon it was looking really good. however today it is a little clousy again. wether this is from the 50% water change or not i dont know. i was careful not to stir up the sand and didnt notice any stirring of the sand when i did it. half an hour or so later it was a little cloudy.

are they head down or tail down?

head down

If because you have bad water quality at the moment, swim bladder can be due to poor water quality.
Try some shelled peas on the fish.

i wish i knew exactly what caused this issue in the water to start with. livebearer tank is perfect and it has been established for less ttime than my main tank.

anyway thanks for the info, ill try the peas

i was thinking after reading another post...could the fact that we have had up and down temps the last week contribute to anything? the last few days have been hot. until yesterday the temp outside had been around 38C and the last two days it has been in the low 20's. during the hot days the tank temp got up to 29C and the cooler days it has been around 26C

Its very likely constipation if they are head down, the peas should help, fast them for a few days and mush up some cooked de shelled peas.

Be careful with using sand with bettas. I've read some people say that their bettas ended up eating the sand and died from getting clogged up.
So just something to keep an eye on.
