After Villy the Black Moor died from swallowing a stone from the bottom of the tank, I have decided to play it safe and remove all the stones and replace with sand. I now have a new black Moor - Liquorice, a pleco another fantail and two mountain minnows. I always clean the filter and do a 20% water change on Wednesdays and so I want to put the sand in. How do I do this. Do I remove the fish from the tank (which I have not done before) or is there some way of adding the sand without taking the fish out. This may seem a silly question but I am a beginner and I will no doubt ask lots of questions that others may see as foolish.

Thanks in advance.

ps I guess I will need to think up a new user name now :(

Or bless him. R.I.P.

You could leave some the stones in there if not too large (gravel size)... and put an inch or so of sand over the top... this would give you a deeper/more dense substrate for (real) plants to root down in... I'd remove the fish temporarily...
