Just want to double check on how to do this. I've had my current internal filter running for about three months now but I wanted to get an external one. Last week I bought a Tetratec Ex600 and have had it running alongside my old filter for a week. I know the bacteria won't have generated in the new one but wanted to get rid of the old so will take the filter media out of the old and put into the new....just wanted to check this is OK?

Thanks,
Andy

Thats fine as long as you give the old media time to settle and not add any more fish for a little while.

If you add all the media from your old filter which had previously cycled, then it would have enough bacteria to cope with the current fishload

I am currently treating the fish for an internal bacteria for which the treatment says I have to remove the carbon filter, this should still be OK though? I've added the ceramic tubes and the white media from theold filter though just not the carbon sponge.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but...

From everything I have read just about anywhere whenver you are medicating your tank you should remove the carbon as the carbon will take the medication out of the water. As long as you've put the rest of the media in the new filter you should be ok.
