think i have this under control, however i just wanted to check that i'm doing what i should be and there's nothing else I can do.

I have an 8g heated filtered reasonably heavily planted tank with a betta in, filters mature and has been for ages, weekly maintenance of 30-40% water changes using dechlor, bit of algae scraping, plant pruning etc.

2 weekends ago we were working on the electrics and they were turned off for the whole house for most of sat and for a few hrs on sunday and monday. His tank also had to be moved. Due to the nature of his filter (built in jobby in the hood of the tank, pumps water up the trickles down through filter floss and back into the tank) a fair bit of muck got churned up in the tank from the filter stopping and starting and the tank being shifted.

About 4/5 days ago I noticed he was looking swollen and a bit pine coney but not massivley advanced. So I immediately did a 50% water change (should have tested the water first but it was 11pm and i just ddin't think) got my fishy health book and looked up dropsy, it advised to ensure perfect water conditions and treat with an multi purpose antibacterial. So I've been dosing the tank with melafix for 4 days now and have done a couple of water changes.

Water parameters are now fine however I suspect that all the movement and power being off has triggered a mini cycle and the poor water quality led to him developing dropsy.

His swelling appeared to have gone down a little the night before last and a little bit more last night.

I will continue to treat with melafix and monitor water quality doing water changes if appropriate.

Just really wanted to check that this is all right and there's nothing else i should be doing?

thanks, i know it can eb tricky to treat but he has shown some signs of improvement so i'm just keeping my fingers crossed for now. hadn't put any salt in, i might do tonight though.

now i can never remember is it right to use marine salt or not? and what salinity do you need to get the tank up to?

Add Aquarium Salt. The dose recommended on the package label is one Tablespoon of Aquarium Salt per five gallons of aquarium water

been told many times aquarium salt is a complete rip off :/

well didn't get to try the salt, binky died last night, think he had a heart attack or something like that.

Ian got home around 2.30 checked on binky and said he looked loads better, swelling had gone down and he was swimming round and more active than he has been for days.

i got home around 4.30 and went to check on him and he was dead, his spine was arched backwards and his chest area was all red, to my untrained eye at least it looked like massive internal bleeding.

poor little bugger. :-(

cried my eyes out last night

Really sorry you lost your betta.

Im afraid its really hard to get bettas back from bacterial diseases and you would have needed epsom salt to draw the fluid from the abdomen area, but usually the kidneys have packed up before the swelling happens.

yeah i think the damage was done before i saw any symptoms unfortunately. i am slightly confused why he appeared to be recovering then died but it's probably one of those things you'll never know.

oh yeah got that book through last night as well thankyou, meant to pm you but with everything that happened last night it slipped my mind.

A lot of animals and fish start to make an apparent recovery but then slip away.

Glad you got the book ok :good:
