They said it was a java fern at the store, but I looked at some java fern pictures and I think this must be something else. I've had the plant for a year and a half.

Hard to tell what it is, but it doesn't look like any kind of java fern I know of.

It doesn't look like one to me either.

Does it have a horizontal rhizome that those leaves grow out of?

Yes I think you are right with crypt Zoddy. Or maybe one of the small echinodorus?

ha, no idea.....it was scary for me to even guess t what it could be!

remove the fuzzy cube - it is rockwool - what the growers use instead of substrate.

I thought it may be

crypt

Echinodorus tennelus is not a crypt ainsy. States in the name it is in fact a specie Echinodorus lol.

Growth doesnt appear to be either E. tenellus or C. parva IMO. Cryptocoryne Willisii does spring to mind. Its seems a little too paddle shaped to be parva IME, mine has always had the paddle shape on the end of the leaves but never that big, it also doesn't appear to be growing as compact as Parva does in any tank i've seen it in. Conditions will vary and effect this though. When i tried E. tenellus it also did not grow anyway like this. The image provided for tenellus i believe to be emerged growth, submerged growth tends to be more grass-like, with the plant losing its paddle shaped tip almost entirely. As the OP stated, they have had this plant for over a year now, so i think that points away from tenellus for the most part. Don't qoute me on that though, its only my understanding from previous reading of the plant. I do however believe it to be a Cryptocoryne of sorts, just unsure as to which exactly.

Yes my mistake - when i typed the link in I put crypt when I should have put echinodorus.

You are probably right it is not tenellus, but I don't think it is willsii - they seem to have a more brown stem that is more defined right up the centre of the leaf.

So far, none of the suggestions look quite right. And thanks for the info one the rock wool, I just took it off.
