Has anyone ever used these before?

They put out around 29*3 lumens per 4" section (est. 30w incandescent) at full power.
They can be driven either buy the purchasable power supplies on the site, or by custom circuitry.  I think with a PIC or some other micro-controller it wouldn't be too hard to do automated sunrise/sunsets or even seasonal lighting changes.

I'm thinking about grabbing a strip to play with.  So long as my local RadioShack doesn't go out of business this might prove a far less expensive lighting option for LEDs.

5050SMDs? I've got some running under some cabinets, they're nice for background but you'd need a lot of them for any serious lighting punch. There also tend to be issues with lensing them, they churn out a fair bit of light but it's a 180 degree spread, so it needs pointing somehow, either with cunning reflectors or ideally some form of lens structure.

There are a few write ups of similar strips about, and they've been good for basic lighting options, but have struggled to provide the oomph for high tech plant rigs or marine systems.

They should, as you say, be easy to programme though, and I have head of them used alongside main lighting rigs for smoother sunrise/sunset options as you've thought already.
