ok so i had a guppy give birth to around 30 fry the other day. as i didnt want to keep them all i just decied to leave them in with the 4 adult guppies presuming atleast half would be eaten
now in the past my fry have tried there hardest to hide away under rocks, in plants etc etc. but this time all the fry just stayed in the open waters. so i was thinking the fry were super dumb and would all be ate within a few days. how ever after the first day of being chased around slighlty (mainly when i put food in). now the adults dont even bother them. they dont try and swim away or anything???????
has anyone else had anything like this happen? or do i just have some super fry

Some adults won't eat fry, or they will and then they stop. It's especially not unusual to have a Guppy not eat their fry, as they seem to be some of the nicer "Parents" out there. I've had it happen a lot with my Platies. The first few batches of a female get eaten, then they don't care anymore.

All fry are super though, even if it's not in the "superman" sort of way! ;)

How large/long are the fry now? Even with fry-eating guppys, most will only make any real effort in trying to catch and eat them when they are 3weeks or younger old depending on how big they are- although when i used to have my betta in his own tank he would attempt to eat fry up to 2cm long :hyper: .
I've also found though that some fry belonging to certain mother guppys tend to be better at surviving though, it probably has somthing to do with breeding as more inbred mother guppys will give birth to weaker batchs of fry and thus more of the fry will be eaten.

i have 3 fry right now. they are about 1.5 weeks old and non of the adult guppies could give a rats @$$ about them. really funny though as the babies think they are bigger than they really are.

these are like 3-4 days old and have been living it large in the tank from about 6 horus after birth
i had a breading net in there with 5 guupies and my one miricle platy. they all hid behind that but i then relised even if half of these survied id be over ran so i took out the breeding net. ever since then they think they own the tank.

and i knew some times the parent wouldnt eat them but all 4 of my adult guppies just leave them alone lol.
maybe its coz im feeding them so much atm?

My guppies don't tend to eat their fry, on the other hand, Only about 1-2 baby swordtails will survive while my guppies are over populating the tank. hehe..

Just a thought if you dont want the fry to survive just dont feed your guppies for a couple of days and then the hunger might make them look at the fry in a different way! It might sound cruel but if you really don't want the fry you might as well let the other fish make a meal out of them! It might or might not work but it won't hurt your adults to go hungry for a couple of days!
