I've just rearanged my room and my tank now sits in a spot where it gets the afternoon sun (4-7pm) It shines really strong on my tank during this time threw the large windows.

Would it harm them at all to have it shine directly on them for a few hours a day?

Im not worried at all for the algae problems as it provides my plecos a free natural meal but how is it for live plants?

The plants will be fine and probably thrive with the extra light. We have them in ponds in full sunlight in Australia and they grow like mad.
The only thing you normally have to worry about is too much heat from the sunlight. However, I doubt that will be a problem in Canada :)

Maybe I can turn the tank lights off a little earlier and let the sun finish up with the daily light requirements then??

It does get quite hot here in summer and I remember last summer my 3 tanks were up at 35-38 celcius for 6 weeks and that was with both windows in my room wide open all day and night. Its very rare to have aircondition units in houses in Canada so I dont have that luxery but my fish seemed to live through it fine and didnt show any stress.

It gets VERY uncomfortable in the summer here inside so im not looking forward to summer really :(

Sorry to go off topic, but....

Wow, is it really like that in Vancouver? I don't think you can say air conditioning is rare in Canada. Where I live (Waterloo Ontario) almost every house has air conditioning and it's really annoying when you find one that doesn't.

ahaha oops. Yah I guess maybe in the East its more common to have airconditioning but on the West in Vancouver we're located right by the Pacific Ocean so its slighty cooler and little to NO houses that ive seen have air cons. Its just not worth it to have them to use for 2 months of the year.

The past few years July and August has got unbearingly hot(25-30 Celcuis) which is way to hot for me and my fish . It also gets way hotter in the house than outside.

I was looking at a portable one just for my fish room but I think I will have to pass as the cheapest one is $300 which is just not justifiable for 2 months of use per year.

you say you are not worried about algae, but it will bring on all types including cyanobacteria, hair algae etc and others which you plec will not touch.

Thats fine. For some reason I dont get algae problems really in my tanks. I had my old 65 Galllon in the same spot last year for 1.5 years and all it ever got was brown spotty algae that my plecos gobbeled up.

I think the fact that I use to dose with Flourish Excel helped out so if I start getting nasty algae my plecs wont touch I guess I will resume with that.

Just want to say thanks for asking this question. I have a tank that gets sun at around 4:00pm too and was wondering the samething. I thought it was too much so I closed the blinds a bit.
