Hi all,

I've had a good search through and couldn't fidn the exact answers i'm looking for.

Since I set my tank up a year ago i've always been unhappy at the kit in the tank. I ahve the heater, skimmer pump, bubble trap and 2 powerheads all in there - answer - get a sump.

So yesterday i bought a 30" tank to make into a sump so i have a few questions:

1. As the tank is full i'd rather not disturb it. This meanss either an overflow box or drilling the back/side. Questino is how does it work when you drill the back or side, does the water just flow into here and down into the sump? Overflow boxes seem expensive and I've read about reliability problems.

2. Sump layout - i've seen the converted sump design on melevs reef - is this good? I need it to contain my v2 400 skimmer some lvie rock and the return pump.

3. Where to i get the caulerpa from - ebay?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm hoping to do this while i've got a few days off over christmas!

Thanks in advance.

James

im thinking of having a sump when i get a juwel rio 125. i know you said it was 30" but how wide and tall is it it would be great help thanks. :good: i think the water justs flow down if you get it drilled. try this site for plumbing http://www.coralculture.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=157&osCsid=bo31qglgoeuid2gejl56u8m5h7

pvc overflow is a good option this topic will explain it all to you :)

if the tank is full and running, drilling is out of the question. you can either buy an overflow box, or make a pvc overflow. either one of these can be simply added to the tank without disrupting its current operation. i personally suggest the PVC option. even if youre not a skilled craftsman, it is easy enough to build yourself, and the materials will cost you between $5 and $10 depending on what you use to seal it. if properly built, it is as reliable as any other overflow system.

the sump design on that site looks like your basic SW sump. basically you need a chamber for your overflow into the sump, a chamber for your skimmer and any other equipment/rock you will be using in your sump, a chamber for your return pump, and a bubble trap to make sure no micro bubbles are getting into your pump. as long as you have these basic elements, the design is completely up to you.

if you are not using LR in your sump, you would not need the refugium section
