in my new 850litre tank it came with a sump set up and after getting it up and running it seemed quite noisy.

I'ved made a quick Durso standpipe, i'ved used a pice of pipe that fits nicely into the top of the plumbing that screws tight onto the drilled hole. I then placed a hose tailpipe inside, small end pointing down then the top part is as it should be with a corner piece.

I ahve a gate valve in the plumbing, it's 1 1/4" pipe.

here's a few pictures of the tank and set up, skip to page 2 or 3 whereit shows it set up.

it's still gurgling a bit and the water crashes down through the pipe.

there's 2 802 powerheads pumping back up.

cheers

If you don't mind taking a little risk, then fit a tap and don't have a stand pipe in the weir at all. close the valve off until the water rises inside the weir, once it reaches about 1" from the top, open up the valve a little so that the water level stays constant near the top of the weir. this is silent but if a snail goes down the pipe, it could get stuck in the valve and cause a flood.

Another problem I can see is if the electricity goes off, will that small sump catch all the water draining from the main tank? it may be worth turning the return pumps off to find out?

right i'll give that one a go.

all the water does fit in the sump, i need to drain a bit off at the moment though as I'ved put 35kg of slate in there.

Right just done that and was a bit fiddly with just a gate valve but it's stabalised a few inch frmo the top.

the only noise now is it gushing past the gate valve which atleast is a constant noise and not a varrying one like gurgling!!.

cheers

It may be better to put a ball valve right next to the sump so that the whole pipe is flooded and it won't be as hard to control.

good point, only thing is it's a bit of an ass to make new plumbing.

i might beable to lower the media level then fit a ball valve in there
