Ok these are my plans I've drawn up for my plans for a sump/refugium. The display tank is 30gallons and the sump/refugium will be a 10gallon. Feedback please!

Looks good however I would go with a drilled tank and overflow opposed to the box type. and wheres the skimmer going?

havnt really decided if Im even doing a skimmer or not...I havnt been able to find a small one or one I can afford yet...was thinking of just waiting and one day doing an HOB skimmer on the display. Also, the tank is already up and running so drilling isnt so much an option now :/

Make sure your "business ends" are power-outage foolproof. By that I mean, have a durso type standpipe in your exterior box so that it never runs dry AND is quiet. Also on the powerhead side, have a check valve and two tiny holes drilled in the outlet tube at the water level to both break siphon and prevent back-flow

Well a google search will yeild some good examples but I'll explain too :). You basically extend the overflow pipe up a little into the container and then fit two right angle fittings on the top of it so that the opening to the standpipe points down. Then you drill a small hole above where the standpipe goes down to the sump to allow air to flow into it. If you have the skills to tap or squeeze a small fitting on there, do so. Anyway you slice it though put a piece of foam over the hole. So what happens is the water level rises in the box and the hole in the top of the standpipe lets water fill the pipe. Then as water crosses over the U and down into the sump, air sucks down with it to prevent gurgling. If the flowrate is high enough you can hear a "hissing" sound from the air which is why you put foam over the air inlet to silence it :)
