We're just planning the final filtration on our 1200L 8ft tank and I wanted to ask an obvious question.

We are planning to wall off a 6inch wide strip off the back of the tank using acrylic, and have intakes at one end and then a system of baffles and media spanning the 8ft to be pumped back into the main tank using powerheads at the other end.

Can anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work?

Also, what is the best way to place the baffles and organise the chambers for a freshwater tank reasonably well-stocked?

I see no reason at all not to use available space within the tank as if it were an external sump. Since I have never set up a sump, anything I said about the layout would be simply conjecture. That is something we are all capable of doing.
