Hi I keep seeing this and have a few questions
Some people have small tanks under there main tank or in the cupboard stand
I was wondering what they do and why
How you set them up

Secondly if I had a quarantine tanks would you have to have fish in there at all times
As if you don't you would lose you cycle no, kind off defeat the reason quarantine

Many thanks

i did that with my old stand, it was something to fill the gap, small electric filter with some sponge from one of the main filters :)

most quarantine tanks, or some, rely on a daily water change anyway, since you want to keep it tip top, its not going to need a filter if that's all you want it for.

Thanks but aren't the sub tanks connected to the main tanks
Water supply and for what purpose

Ok I get the quarantine bit change water every day so no filter needed

Thats a sump, and is different. They are mainly used for marine tanks to filter the water, it also acts as a place to keep the equipment such as heater, skimmer etc. it also allows you to boost the volume of your system ie if you have a 75gal tank and a 25gal sump, you have a 100gal system

We dont generally use them in freshwater as we have an external/internal filter and a heater and thats it, the marine lot love their gadgets and extras LOL! No, just joking, they have different needs, like the skimmers have no way of being put in the main tank as they stand up and are a bit awkward so they dump them in the sump rather than cutting out space in the hood etc, their sumps are sometimes used to seperate fish if need be but not really for medical reasons as the system is connected
