Suicidal Tiger Barb!

strangest thing happened this morning!! i was sitting having a cup of tea when i heard a dull thud coming from behind the fish tank!! myself, my partner and my cat all went to investigate only to find that one of my tiger barbs had escaped through the space in the hood where the filter and heater cables go!! my partner picked up the barb and we both thought he was dead. however, he flapped and my partner got a fright and dropped him again!! we quickly picked him up and put him back in the tank (along with some fluff!). he is now swimming around quite happily and has his colour back!! i have taped some paper over the gaps as a temporary measure until i can think of a permanent solution!! not sure it was the great escape but he sure tried!!!

One of my Vietnamese Cardinals did the same thing two weeks ago but I did not hear it fall onto the carpet and found it an hour or so later. Not so much of a happy ending

I've found that sponges for aquaclear power filters cut to fit, seal gaps quite nicely.

Have you checked your water to see whether there's good reason for attempting to escape?

I've got some fabric draped over the back of mine, mainly to stop any airborne nasties getting into my tank (it's in my bedroom so deodorant and hair products get sprayed around lots). I hope it'd also prevent any fish jumping out but haven't had this put to the test yet thankfully!
