Having researched my first tank, and opting for a medium-sized Rekord 96, I have now begun the fishless cycle and thoughts turn toward first fish and stocking the new tank.

This is my first tank of probably 3 - the other two will be larger and house specimen fish. To begin this will be a Community Tank - nice and easy until I get to grips with fishkeeping.

Main criteria is colour and relaxation! - I've housed this one in the bedroom and even the empty tank bubbling away is relaxing! In my mind I have the usual, Neons or similar Tetras, Male Guppies, possibly Platty, Swordtail etc. These are fish common from many years ago - what about modern day favourites (I'm out of touch).

Another query I have is for interest in various parts of the tank, i.e. bottom dwellers, mid and top. Feel free to advise, which conflicts to avoid etc. I'd love Angelfish but not with small Tetras (next tank).

I would ask my LFS but not off to the best of starts with them :-(

edit: can I add fish easily located in the UK please.

Steve

You could go with some Cory Cats for scavenging up uneaten food from the bottom. They are really cute, fun to watch, and mild mannered.

Hi Quacker,
Once the cycle has finished, you could add a few Mollies, Platies or Swordtails. They are all excellent starter fish, hardy and have plenty of colour.
You are best adding about 6 to start off with, give it a week and then add another 6 providing your water eadings are all ok. Adding them slowly gives the filter a chance to build up bacteria and also allows you to get a better idea of what to add next.
Fish like Neons and Guppies prefer a more mature tank so you are best waiting at least 3 months before adding any.
Angels also prefer a more mature tank and need a depth of about 18", so it might be best waiting until you get your bigger tank.
As for bottom dwellers, they also prefer a mature tank, so wait at least 3 months before adding any. You could have one of the smaller Plecos like the Bristlenose Catfish or even a group of Corydoras. Both are fantastic fish with lots of character.

people love corys, ive nvr had so idk myself.. umm try loaches once the tanks matured a bit maybe? always nice fish and fun to watch. just watch cuz clown loaches get massive, most others are ok size wise. just a thought..

Try timstropicals.com and goto the gallery. Some ideas there maybe, but the compatibility isnt always great on there, its not bad just doesnt show all of the options most times.

have fun too eh..

how about some cardinals?

yup i just assumed that was fitted in with the "neons or other like tetras" part he posted, but yes they will work too, im not the biggest expert with this stuff, but i try to help.. maybe somebody else can help u out number wise here.. but yea cardinals work too..

Thanks for the suggestions - can't go wrong with Cardinals, Neons, Glowlight, Black Neons etc. - everyone's favourite schooling fish. I remember them from back in the day. Obviously I need to know modern day fish and their colours. Then of course compatibility and capacity issues.

Keep them coming - I can look up any I don't know :good:

Celestial Pearl Danio/Galaxy Rasbora and Sparkling Gourami are two fairly modern fish and I have been told they are easy to keep and suitable for that size tank. Problem is finding them, my local lfs don't have either unfortunately.

Incidentally it is the same tank as me. I have just finished my fishless cycle, took 5-6 weeks and am about to add my first fish.

Quacker, others will disagree with me, but this is my recommendation:
1 one red fin black shark (couldn't do without one.)
5 or 6 small cory catfish (as a recent convert to this wonderful species!)
Two banjo catfish.
A shoal of long-fin danios.
A trio of endlers (for preference) or nice guppies – either one will give you a host of colourful bred-like-rabbits-fish that you will need to get thinned out all too soon..!
I would avoid neon and cardinal tetras for a while, as they seem to drop dead at the drop of a hat, and sword-tails, because they will live forever and take over the whole tank!
But add some Angle fish – no community tank is complete without some small Angle fish... (By the time they are too big for your tank, you'll have a much bigger tank to move them into, won't you..?)

“Yeah, I know I promised that I wouldn't want another fish tank, but you don't want me to have to flush poor Brian and Freda down the toilet, do you..?”
“Well, no...”
“So then, my little cherry pudding, we really do need that new 4 foot tank for them, don't we..?”
“Well, I don't want them killed, so I suppose, if you say so...”
“You are soooo compassionate, it's no wonder I love you so much..!” Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss. kiss...

It's going to cost a fair bit more than a few wet kisses to get that extra six-foot tank next year, but I reckon that a smooth talker like you are in there with a reasonable chance..!

i will say i do like that recommendation, being a huge shark and angelfish guy.. and people all over LOVE corys although ive nvr had them, so they must be good. Danios are always nice, its all upto you really.

Some great suggestions, just make sure your tank has matured enough before adding things like Tetras, Angels etc. :good:

yes, if u did perhaps go with the shark and angel, etc.. add the shark first id say.. mine have always been hardy fish and plus he will be able to pick his territory first that way, idk bout corys i think they are good without waitin too long but idk for sure, danios are known for being very hardy so those 3 (or maybe excluding the corys if im wrong) would be the first to add if u did happen to go with something like that. Basically id say give us a list b4 u buy and we will help to the best of our ability.

Danios are a good hardy fish so no problem with adding them first.
Cories are very sensitive and need a more mature tank, so wait a while before adding any. ;)

well my 96l tank has just finnished cycling and after about a week i will add my fish
But.... i thought as i had done a fishless cycle i should add all my fish now as i have the filter to back it up...
but read on this thread that i should add them slowly?
