i recently upgraded my 29 gallon tank to a 36 bow front and my 20 gallon tank to a 27 cube, both tanks where nice and clear for about a week and then all of a sudden both where white with amonia. both tanks are over filtered and using amonia neutrilizing crystals. i used aged water and the water from the old tanks, so the tank swap should have worked out like a water change. i dont know where this amonia spike came from and i cant get ahead of it, ive already gone through a whole bottle of ammo lock.

what should i do? i dont want to go changing more water only to have it perpetuate the problem. should i just leave it alone and continue with the ammo lock?

also to make matter worse, i was given fish from a friend that where going to get flushed if i didnt take them, so now they are in the tanks as well and im sure not helping the sitation any.

PLEASE HELP!

Repost this in the emergency section using the template and more people will help. Water changes wont hurt anything. I would do some and cut down that ammonia so the fish are more comfortable.

I'm not a pro so don't take my word for it but.. Your filter is now having to get through more water than it did before, the bacteria wouldn't be built up to keep up with a larger tank and the extra fish... (I think) Its essentially going to go through a mini cycle while it reajusts itself...

Would just check every day, do about 20% water changes as needed or %50ish if its giving you a lot of trouble and is very high.. Did you also use most of the same subtrate? I do believe a lot of ammonia can be hidden away in there and is released if disturbed...

As I said, don't take my word for it, pretty new to the whole thing but I've been doing a lot of reading around, it could maybe be what I mentioned though :) Hope its of some use :p

I don't know what ammo lock is so I can't comment about that :)
