I bought a giant bag of Miracle Grow Organic Choice for like $6 and a 25lb bag of play sand for like $3 at Home Depot. My plants have been growing like crazy in the tank I planted with that. I don't know how much cheaper you could get.

JBL aquabsis+ is becoming popular, i used it in my 60l & my current 240l.

Cat litter is fine, they sell it cheap at Tesco :good:

There is just plain old soil, or aquatic compost. Just leave it outside for a couple of weeks so bacteria convert all the ammonium & urea into nitrogen. If you arent worried about this spike then it doesnt matter.

Or you could use inert substrate and dose the water column more heavily.

I used B&Q top soil - £3.95 and mixed through JBL substrate nutrient concentrate - £4.99

Can't comment if it's any good or not, or even safe but I shall see after I get some plants in.
