Hey, all. There's a chance I'm going to be starting a new 20-gallon freshwater tank. I was wondering which (disregard which fish I'll have) do you think is the best substrate for an undergravel filter that also isn't going to scratch up any fish? Include any and all types of substrate.

Thanks a bunch,
Valerie :D

ive got this stuff thats made from clay.....its biege n brown n pourus

apparently its really good for plants as the water can get to the roots properly coz of tiny holes in the gravel and the roots grow thru the lil pieces of gravel so they anchor down better

my pleco's seem to like it and so do the other fish

i paid £20 for a large bucket....15 kilo's.....and it was enuff to fill my 180 litre tank

Tek :fish:

Hi val

For a UGF you will need a substrate that will not block or channel easily. Gravel is the best. You can get it in many different colours, or just natural.

yep, gravel is the best for a UGF. as dolphin said they make all different colors or natural. also all different sizes from pea gravel to bigger than marble sized. IMO I would use the UGF and get an external filer either a hang on the back type or canister. if you can get one with a biowheel. I swear by the things.
