Substrate Without Layering

Hi forum, Long time since I visited here.

I'm setting up a 2nd tank then tearing down the original...

this will also be planted tank, but this time I intend to avoid one problem I have had consistantly.. My catfish!!!
He loves to dig and causes mayhem for me with my Substrate layer/sand, Anyone able to point me in a direction where I can get a substrate which dont need layers?
is it possible with Tetraplant complete? from what I gather no!! and Ideally dark in colour!

I believe that the ADA substrate, Tropica and Natural Soil can be used on their own without capping.
