people write all sorts of rubbish here. some even suggest an airstone is a prerequisite for a tropical tank.

Playsand is fine. too many people use it for it to be "terrible".

well play sand isnt exactly white, its more of a cream colour and that poster is quite correct about white rocks, they discolour quickly to diatoms in a new tank. Until your tank is up and running for a good few months it will suffer diatoms too, im pretty confident of that, but it all balances out in time.

Sand is the best substrte in the world for my money.
Cheap easy to clean and looks the part.
I've never changed a substrate with the fish in the tank but I imagine it's straight forward.
Just make sure you really wash the new sand.

Put some of the sand in a bucket and fill it up with water and stir the sand, you will soon see the water turn murkey. Repeat the process until the water runs clear.

If you are getting Argos Play sand then you will have to wash the sand for a while, as they seem to be very dirty.

Got to admit, since i took the Corys out of the 4ft with Argos sand, it does look a little "stale" sometimes, gets a light brown tint to the topmost layer. I give a good swish about when i suck out the junk each week.

If you have something that will turn it over or move it about (plecs wil happilt rearrange it) you'll not get any discolouration.

I know for sure my BN is going to do it. He slams with his caudal fin on the gravel too :)

Thanks for all of your answers, it helped!
