i recently changed substrate in my tank and added dirt as a bottom layer about 1-1.5 inch thick and then placed a layer of about 1-2 inch layer of sand on top. i re planted all my plants and wanted to know as the sand on top is quite deep will the plant roots grow down to the dirt layer ? as i wanted to aim to improve growth but was worried that the sand on top is too deep for the plants to get any nutrients, will it be okay ?

thanks :)

Dependant on what kinds of plants you have, yes.

Stem plants will be less likely to build huge root systems, but as they are not great root feeders anyways, it doesn't really matter.

Things like swords, crypts and bulb type plants will create huge root systems that will reach the soil layer. If you've ever tried to pull up an established crypt or sword, you'll know what I mean. :p

ah yes thanks for that! i have a lot of crypts anyway so im quite glad about that :) and yes i know what you mean :p
