I'm thinking of placing my heater horizontally along the bottom of the aquarium where the gravel & the water meet. Will this help the plants growth since the bottom will be warmer?

Thanks

ive heard using inline heaters in the substrate itself but ive never heard of anyone doing this, it might help a little IMHO but not too much since gravel i think is still a fair insulator against heat or cold.

Hetaers are supposed to be horizontal. Mostly you see them at 45deg as most people have them on one side & they don't fit horixontally.

Not true. You can place them horizontal or vertical. It doesn't matter, at least when it comes to submersibles.

I have seen something similar to underfloor heating (eg pipes through which warmth is pumped) which lies under the substrate. this may be a good alternative to moving your heater.

I like to keep my heater away from the fish, inside the filter so that the water is heated as it circulates, this also prevents any burn problem that may occur from fish lying on it etc.

The pipe system mentioned above is on sale in the St Albans store of maidenhead aquatics, not too sure of cost etc.

I guess the idea is to keep the substrate warm for the roots. You make a good point about fish lying on the heater.
